PlayStation

Since Sony Computer Entertainment launched the first ever PlayStation (PS) in Japan on 03 December 1994 the world of computer gaming has never looked back. Production of the original PlayStation ceased in March 2006 by which time it had sold over 102 million units worldwide.

The face of the PlayStation has evolved over time. Following the original PlayStation upgrades have included the Net Yaroze, PS One, PocketStation, a standard size and slimline PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite, PSX and PlayStation 3.

The original PlayStation was superseded by the PlayStation 2. The good news for those people who have games for the original PlayStation was that the PlayStation 2 processor is the same as per the original and therefore nearly every single PlayStation game can be played on PlayStation 2. A slimmer version of PlayStation 2 was introduced soon after and became become very popular amongst video game players the world over.

In 2004 Sony introduced a handheld games console, the PlayStation Portable, or as it is more commonly known, the PSP. Games need be purchased specifically for the PSP as they are smaller in size but you can download any PlayStation game from Sony’s online store for the PSP.

The third generation of PlayStation was the eagerly awaited PlayStation 3 which was launched to the world in Japan on 11 November 2006. PlayStation 3 became very popular and at one point Sony could not produce them quickly enough for the western market, especially around Christmas 2006. The 40GB version of PlayStation 3 does not support all PlayStation 2 games although Sony report that some of the games are being made compatible by software emulation.

Through their PlayStation, Sony have made the world of home computer games accessible to an ever-increasing world audience and its popularity shows no sign of decreasing.
