Desktop Computer

A Desktop Computer is also known as a PC (personal computer). This type of computer is intended for use at a single location and is not designed to be constantly moved about.

The monitor of a desktop is separate to the keyboard and mouse and more often than not the speakers are separate as well. The processor and hard drive are located in a separate box that is usually stored under the desk.

The processor of a desktop computer is the brain of the machine and therefore controls all aspects of the computer. There are many different types of processors each designed to handle different types of tasks. For basic tasks and a basic performance level am Intel Celeron D or AMD Sempron is recommended. When it comes to tasks that require a high-end performance for those more complex tasks then an Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 x 2 is recommended.

The size of hard drives in desktop computers vary but as a whole the larger the hard drive the more music and videos you can store, so it is important to understand what you want to use your computer for before purchasing so that you get a hard drive suitable for you.

Operating systems that are installed on desktop computers vary but the two main systems are Microsoft Windows and Mac. Examples of Microsoft operating systems include Windows XP and Windows Vista. Most desktops are pre-installed with an operating system.

Many programs will be pre-installed onto the desktop computer and may include the likes of Microsoft Works for producing documents, games such as solitaire and email devices such as Outlook.
