People are often surprised by the difference a single letter can make, for instance, is it Search Engine Optimisation or Search Engine Optimization?
In the UK, Optimisation is spelt with an "s", while in the States it has a "z". If you search for search engine optimisation on Google.co.uk it normally offers you the "Did you mean Search Engine Optimization" choice, in other words, Google an American company, thinks you have spelt optimization wrongly.
So how much difference can this make? Well this site is about 8th on Google.co.uk for the term search engine optimization and about 21st spelt the English way. Why? Well if you look at the home page you will see it has, even though a UK based company, been set up for the optimization spelling. It is not until you get to this page before you find one optimized for the term search engine optimisation. This page first went live on December 18th 2007, so may take a while before it is ranked.
Though I deliberately went for the American way (we are becoming more American in our on-line habits) it does show the importance of getting a professional to do the necessary SEO work on your pages as a mistake can take many months to rectify in the search ranking wars. For these terms there are some 3,000 searches in the UK for the spelling with an "s" and 2,000 with a "z". In the states however, there are very few with the "s". So my target is for both sides of the pond. The web being as it is, means that anyone, in any country, can optimize web pages for any company in any other country, thanks to the beauty of email et al. Hope I did not loose you there?
