Amit Singhal a Google Fellow in charge of the ranking team at Google has written a post on the official Google blog entitled Introduction to Google Ranking.
After a brief introduction about the the world of Information Retrieval (the posh term for the field of search) he rather interestingly says that “We make about ten ranking changes every week and simplicity is a big consideration in launching every change”. Ten changes a week, that in itself should show why there is a need to employ a search engine ranking team to get and keep you higher within Google’s SERP’s.
However I disagree with another statement of his, talking about does Google manually edit it’s results, he says “Let me just answer that with our third philosophy: no manual intervention”.
So why do I disagree, well it happened to this website. I actually got to the top of Google for search engine optimization (UK world wide search) and then had a 7 minute visit from Google.inc, followed by a rapid drop to 18th.
I posted in here previously about a missed cache causing my site to drop, well that missed cache happened a day or so later, but my drop in rankings actually happened hours after a Google.inc visit.
Since this visit by Google.inc I often climb in the search engine ranking to about 8th and then overnight fall back to about 14th or 15th. No reason for it at all, just up and down like a Yo-yo.
There will be a follow up soon on the Google blog, I can’t wait to see what he will add. Until then I will endevour to increase my search engine ranking.
