The starting point for any business is the health and safety policy, this should be divided into three main sections:
- Statement of intent. This statement shows that the organisation has a firm commitment to health and safety and gives an overview of the main hazards associated with the particular area of work. It is vital that the most senior person in the organisation signs this statement and that it is communicated to staff throughout the company.
- Organisation. This section details how the organisation is structured to cope with the health and safety management system you have chosen to implement (i.e. HSG 65). You should detail how/who will have responsibility for particular issues such as auditing and monitoring of the management system for example.
- Arrangements. This section details the day-to-day arrangements in place for the hazards and processes in place within your individual organisation. You should details areas such as COSHH, Work at Height and Accident reporting, showing what arrangements you have in place.

Our primary advice to any business if doing this is BE AWARE OF TEMPLATE POLICY DOCUMENTS AND RISK ASSESSMENTS. These documents can be downloaded from various websites at little cost. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforcement officers will spot this at an early stage and will not be impressed. By using such documents it is often considered that little consideration has been given to taking ownership of health and safety and often major hazards which are specific to your own industry are missed.
