Increase in Locum Doctor Jobs

MPP Locums have seen a large increase in the requests for NHS locum doctors in 2010. This trend is also expected to continue in the future.

With NHS budgets under the spotlight many vacant doctor posts are expected to remain unfilled as NHS headcount will be monitored closely with the objective of saving money and reducing costs. However as soon as hospitals come under pressure due to seasonal demands doctors have to be found and locum doctor agencies are the fist port of call. Over the lasts twelve months MPP Locums have noticed a substantial increase in the number of locum doctor jobs being requested by hospitals.

This is also fuelled by the new European working time directive (WTD) limiting the number of hours doctors can work in a week to a maximum of 48.  Historically junior doctors would work up to 60 hours per week on average. With the new restrictions more doctors are needed just to cover weekly rotas.

As part of the new WTD senior doctors are also restricted with their hours. Previously consultant doctors would supervise junior doctors while the consultants worked well in excess of 48 hours. Now there is a catch 22 scenario. Hospitals need more junior doctors on rotation and need more consultants to supervise junior doctors.

The above difficulties along with new government restrictions capping the number of overseas doctors under Tier 2 allowed into the UK will also put more pressure on hospitals where they do want to recruit to fill doctor jobs.

Many of the doctors filling NHS doctor jobs are from overseas and on non EU passports. With tough new immigration controls overseas doctors will find it considerably more difficult to find doctor jobs in the UK.

MPP Locums also expect to see a further increase in Locum GP jobs across the UK. From 2013 NHS Primary Care Trusts are to be effectively closed with the budgets and functionality handed to GP consortiums. The budgets expected to be in the hands of GPs is somewhere in the region of £ 100bn. With huge increases in responsibility GP practices will be much larger, and open for longer. The GPs will play a much larger role than that of today, however there are still a lot of unanswered questions in relation to performance monitoring and achieving value for money.

With all of the above effecting supply and demand of locum doctors and locum doctors already in short supply the outlook for the future is only pointing one way. This being more reliance on long term and short term locum doctors.

To ensure MPP Locums attract the best locum doctors we pay the highest locum pay rates across the UK. However to ensure we receive as many locums jobs as possible we charge hospitals and GP practices the most competitive rates in the UK.
